Bromocresol Green (BCG) is odourless, pH sensitive triphenylmethane dye with formula C21H14Br4O5S. It is sparingly soluble in water and soluble in ethanol, ether, ethyl acetate. It belongs to a class of dyes called sulfonephthaleins.  

It is used as a pH indicator in applications such as growth mediums for microorganisms and titrations also in variety of colorimetric detection technologies, sol-gel matrices and the detection of ammonia.

The most common use of bromocresol green is to measure serum albumin concentration within mammalian blood samples in cases of renal failure and liver disease.

BCG is used as a tracking dye for DNA agarose gel electrophoresis, in protein determinations and in charge-transfer complexation processes.
