Nitric Acid 68-72% is removes iron residue and forms an oxide layer that boosts the corrosion of the stainless steel instead to improve the corrosion resistance of part made from austenitic, ferritic and martensitic corrosion resistance  steel. It is a non-foaming acid that breaks up and removes mineral deposits that build up on equipment surfaces. Used as recommended it does not corrode stainless steel.
High carbon, high chromium martensitic 440C grades which are selected for high hardness and resistance may be exempt from passivation treatments at the discretion of the procuring activity.
