METHYL VIOLET FOR MICROSCOPY
METHYL VIOLET FOR MICROSCOPY
Methyl Violet 10B powder dye is intended for routine staining according to Gram, for staining bacterial components and for staining amyloids. The main use of methyl violet is to dye textiles purple and give deep violet and blue colors in paints and printing ink. Methyl violet 2B (simply called methyl violet) is used in chemistry as a pH indicator. Methyl violets are mixtures of tetramethyl, pentamethyl and hexamethyl pararosanilins.

Crystal violet will in fact stain living cells (though it is toxic) as well as dead cells. The viability assay is only to be used on adherent cells. It does not differentiate live and dead cells on the plate, the dead cells are simply washed off because they are no longer adherent.
